AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas Volleyball swept Texas Tech, 25-17, 25-14, 25-14, in the regular season final in front of a sold-out crowd at Gregory Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Longhorns closed out the regular season with a 22-4 overall record and a 17-1 mark in Big 12 Conference play. Texas won its final 76 home Big 12 matches at Gregory Gym.
The match also marked the final regular season home match for five Texas seniors, Carissa Barnes, Bella Bergmark, Reilly Heinrich, Asjia O’Neal and Molly Phillips.
O’Neal and Phillips both went out with a bang, as O’Neal had nine kills and 12 blocks with a .444 hitting percentage while Phillips ahd eight kills on just 14 swings.
Madisen Skinner led the Longhorns with 14 kills and hit .542 in the match, with six digs, one service ace and two blocks.
Ella Swindle dished out 24 assists and added seven blocks, three kills and three digs. Emma Halter had a team-high 17 digs and also had four assists and two digs.
Barnes finished with nine digs and two assists, while Keonilei Akana had five service aces and four digs.
The Longhorns took an early 7-2 lead in the match but Texas Tech came right back with a 7-2 run to tie it up at 9-all. With the set tied at 11-11, Texas took over with an 8-1 run to make the score 19-12. Skinner led the way with seven kills, while hitting .583 in the set.
The second set was all Texas as the Longhorns jumped out to an early 13-3 lead and never let up. Texas cruised to a 25-14 win while hitting .387 and holding Texas Tech to an .071 hitting percentage.
The third set was tied at 6-all before the Longhorns used a 4-0 run to go up 10-6. After the Red Raiders cut it to three, Texas went on a 6-0 run to grab an 18-9 lead and put the match away.
Texas will wait to learn its postseason selection on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday on ESPN at 5 p.m. CT.
