Apple is looking for talent, who can develop prototypes and conduct tests on 6G technology candidates.
Apple has been working on an in-house 5G modem for a while; however, the company hasn’t found much success and is currently dependent on Qualcomm for the 5G modem for iPhones and iPads. As the company continues to develop an in-house 5G model, a report by Bloomberg suggests that the company is also working on an in-house 6G modem.
According to the PowerOn newsletter by Mark Gurman, the company has been working on a 6G modem since 2021. Given that 6G will not be a reality until at least 2030, it gives Apple plenty of time to develop, test, and optimise in-house 6G technology. This will not only make Apple self-reliant but will also give more control over the hardware, along with financial benefits in the long run.

Modems are difficult to develop, and they are an important part of a modern smartphone that needs to be tested across the globe. Apple has successfully made chips for iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs, with the modem being the last missing part of the puzzle.
Currently, Apple is looking for a cellular platform architect who can drive and coordinate 6G reference architecture, develop prototypes, and conduct experiments to assess 6G technology candidates.
Qualcomm is the sole 5G modem provider for Apple. Despite a few conflicts between the two tech giants, Apple did renew its license with Qualcomm back in September 2023, where Qualcomm will continue to provide 5G modems to iPhones until 2026.
6G is anticipated to be leaps and bounds ahead of 5G, with ultra-low latency and higher data transfer speeds. Theoretically, 6G is said to offer up to 11Gbps of uplink speed and could change the way we use connected devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
