Cameron McDowell, a high-honor senior at McCracken County High School, is this week’s Murray State University Teen of the Week.
McDowell has a 4.0 GPA and is on track to be valedictorian of his class. He takes dual enrollment classes at WKCTC and advanced placement courses at McCracken County High School. He said he values taking challenging classes and participating in various clubs.
“I don’t want to limit myself, with as many possibilities as my school offers,” he said.
HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America) and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) are McDowell’s favorites among the organizations he belongs to. He said that’s because he’s still weighing his options on a career pathway.
“I’m looking into two career pathways,” McDowell explained. “I want to go into health care, but I also want to do business.”
McDowell works as a pharmacy technician at CVS, where he finds it rewarding to experience the value of a real job.
“It’s given me a lot of, you know, insight on what a job looks like,” he said. “More of a career-type thing. It’s been beneficial to me so far.”
Although McDowell isn’t actively involved in any business-related job or activity outside of school, he said soon he’ll be on an advisory board for business for the Paducah community. He hopes that experience will give him insight into a business career.
“My FBLA advisors are helping me with that,” he said. “I don’t have a job for business, but I try and do as much in that sector as well.”
During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., McDowell met with elected officials and representatives who encouraged him to organize a voter registration drive for students turning 18 by November.
“I got around 40 people to sign up for that,” he said. “I was able to influence my fellow students to participate in the election.”
Regarding colleges, McDowell said he is still in the application stage. He notes that although he has submitted multiple applications, Western Kentucky University is his principal choice.
“It looks like it’d be a really good spot to have a college,” he explained. “Not too far. Not too close. So, I really liked WKU; that’s definitely number one on my list right now.”
McDowell gives credit to his counselor, Jacob Simmons. He said Simmons oversees hundreds of students but always has time to assist and mentor him.
“He’d always been very prompt with getting back to me on emails, transcripts, and other information along those lines,” he explained. “He’s been able to help me with classes and everything like that.”
McDowell hopes that his classmates take their senior year into account and fix any mistakes that may hinder them from graduating. He notes that senior year is the most crucial year, and ensuring their graduation should be students’ main focus.
