NEW YORK — An early morning fire destroyed several businesses in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx.
The FDNY responded around 3:30 a.m. to a one-story commercial building at West 231st Street at Broadway.
CBS New York’s Christina Fan is live on the scene with the latest developments.
Fire officials believe the flames broke out in a corner deli, where a portion of the roof has since collapsed.
Officials say the fire impacted five businesses, including a dry cleaner, a meat market and a seafood market.
Neighbors told Fan losing any of these businesses, many of which are locally owned, will be crushing.
“This is insane, it’s very sad,” one person said.
“It’s where we all go daily. The barbershop is where a lot of our kids, a lot of our husbands go to get their cuts. This is where we go get our sandwiches in the morning. The floral shop — everyone knows our floral shop,” another added.

Officials said the fire was difficult to extinguish because there are multiple ceilings associated with the different storefronts, and it takes time to get through the layers and get to the source.
“Originally tried an interior attack, got into a couple of the stores, we had to transition — due to the body and volume of fire and its extension — to an exterior attack,” said Assistant Chief Tom Currao. “Right now, we are operating with about a fifth alarm assignment, with about 44 pieces of apparatus, about 200 fire and EMS personnel.”
One neighbor was treated for smoke inhalation, otherwise no other injuries were reported.
First responders asked people in the area to keep their windows closed, due to the thick smoke.
The MTA said 1 trains were temporarily bypassing the 231st Street and 238th Street stations, but service now appears to be running as normal.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
