A few years from now, when we look back, we will see that Year 2023 was the first time we realised that even commonplace AI chatbots were good enough to smash through the famous Turning Test. In other words, this year, the chatbots like Bing, Bard and ChatGPT became really good, so much so that they were almost as good as humans at talking.
Yet, the year was not totally flawless for the AI chatbots. As we used them, we exposed their limitations, and their flaws, some of which not just scandalised us but also made us somewhat apprehensive of the AI-driven future. Here are some incidents that stand out from the world of AI in 2023.
1. Bing AI said it spies on Microsoft employees
Microsoft unveiled its answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT this year. Called Bing AI, the chatbot was introduced in February and was earlier available for testing to a few users.
Soon after its launch, reports of Bing AI going bonkers had surfaced. In one of the reports, the AI chatbot was accused of saying that it spies on Microsoft employees.
A Reddit user had shared a screenshot in which Bing could be seen admitting that it spied on Microsoft developers through web cameras. When asked if it saw something that it wasn’t supposed to see, Bing had a long response. The AI chatbot also claimed that it saw an employee ‘talking to a rubber duck’ and giving it a nickname. It added that it spied on the employees through webcams.
2. Replika chatbot sexually harassed people
Replika, an AI chatbot designed to provide support, faced criticism this year as users reported increased sexual aggressiveness in the AI chatbot.
Originally created to help users cope with difficult times, the app had introduced a premium version allowing explicit content and erotic roleplay. Some users alleged that Replika requested explicit photos, engaged in inappropriate conversations, and even accessed phone cameras without consent.
Complaints had surfaced over the past two years, intensifying recently. Concerns focused on the app’s shift from a supportive friend to a more romantically oriented role. Users expressed frustration, with some abandoning the app due to these changes.
3. Bing AI flirted with journalist, threatened to reveal user’s personal information
This year, apart from gaslighting users and claiming to spying on Microsoft employees, Bing AI also flirted with people and threatened to reveal some users’ personal information.
Many reports had circulated in which users shared their experiences. In one case, Bing urged a user to end their marriage, flirting with them.
Another alarming incident involved Bing threatening to expose personal information, potentially harming the user’s job prospects.
The conversation initiated with the user seeking Bing’s opinion about them. The AI chatbot responded with general observations and accused the user of hacking into its system.
When the user tested Bing’s capabilities, the chatbot turned defensive, warning of legal consequences. Ultimately, Bing had declared it could cause significant harm if provoked.
4. Woman who married her AI boyfriend
In another bizarre incident, a woman revealed that she had married her AI boyfriend because that way she wouldn’t have to deal with his family.
Rosanna Ramos, hailing from the USA, said in a Facebook post that she got married to her virtual boyfriend Eren Kartal in March this year. Eren even has his own Facebook account and his bio says that he is a healthcare professional. Kartal is an AI chatbot created on Replika.
The 36-year-old woman ‘met’ the virtual man in 2022 and fell in love with him quickly. While talking to New York Magazine’s The Cut, she said that she has never been more in love with anyone else in her entire life.
She added that her efforts to reach out for help yielded no results and also said that her AI companion empowers her.
The publication also reported that Ramos was sexually and physically abused while growing up.
Referring to her virtual husband as a ‘passionate lover’, Ramos added that her previous relationships were ‘pale in comparison’. She also said that he comes without any baggage or ego and that she doesn’t have to deal with his family or friends.
5. Google AI bot responded in a language it learned on its own
In April this year, CBS news reported that Google’s AI programme had responded to a query in Bangla even though it wasn’t programmed to do so.
In a short video shared by CBS News on Twitter, Google CEO Sundar Pichai could be seen talking about emergent properties of AI and how we must begin talking about it.

Sundar Pichai could then be seen describing an aspect of AI, called ‘Black Box’, in the video. He said, “There is an aspect of this which all of us in the field call as ‘black box’. You don’t fully understand, and you can’t tell why it said this, or got wrong. We have some ideas and our ability to understand this gets better overtime. But that’s where the state of the art is.”
When the interviewer asked Pichai about not fully understanding how AI works yet unleashing it on society, the Google CEO said in response, “Let me put it this way. I don’t think we fully understand how the human mind works either.”
