New restaurant downtown, cozy up with a book at a coffee shop and more Jackson-area business news

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A new coffee chain is coming to Jackson, a new restaurant has opened downtown and other Jackson-area businesses are making news.

Here are some recent business stories you may have missed.

Cozy up with a good book & a cup of coffee at Stirling Books & Brew

If you’re looking to meet a friend, browse a book collection or just grab a cup of joe, there’s a spot for that in downtown Albion.

Stirling Books & Brew, owned by Jim and Staci Stuart, is half café and half bookstore. The space was previously home to Books & More before the couple took over in 2017 and gave it a new name.

On the café side of the store, customers find a range of lattes, frappes, smoothies, bubble tea and hot chocolate, with the coffee coming from Jackson Coffee Co.

People can also browse through the vast book collection, which offers used and new books. ranging from young adult, science fiction, fantasy and children picture books.

What’s that? A coffee chain is brewing up a new location in Jackson

Residents looking for a new coffee option in the Jackson area are in luck as a new development is taking shape.

Tim Hortons is opening a new location in Jackson County at 2550 Airport Road in Blackman Township. Residents driving by have likely seen some site work taking place at the chain’s third Jackson location, and officials said they hope to open the new shop in summer 2024.

The site used to house the former Hot ‘n Now restaurant before it closed and was replaced by Jackson Coffee Co. until it also closed in roughly 2021, according to property records.

‘A shared community memory’: Historic Michigan Theatre will use winter to complete renovations

Jackson’s historic Michigan Theatre is gearing up for its next set of renovations.

A $6.2-million capital campaign was launched at the downtown Jackson theater at 124. N. Mechanic St. in December 2022 to maintain its historical significance, while bringing the facility into the 21st century.

So far, a little more than $5 million has been raised and phase one of the project has recently completed after construction began in July. A new air exchange unit was installed, and damaged plaster was replaced under the balcony and along the top of the 56-foot walls.

The theater is now gearing up for phase two of the renovation, and expects to close, starting Tuesday, Jan. 2. Plans are to reopen it with a fresh look on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

Big sandwiches, soups make new Murphy’s Bistro a lunch go-to spot in downtown Jackson

Murphy’s Bistro had a soft opening on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in its location in the former Economy Art & Framing building at 145 W. Michigan Ave. The restaurant is offering a limited menu to patrons right now in its early days, but so far business has been going well, general manager Emma Stark previously said.

The restaurant is owned by Jessica Tobin and was started by her and Stark as a way to offer more quick-service meals, as compared to other restaurants downtown.

So far, the restaurant is working at 95% capacity, as it is still waiting to add a cool-air exchange so it can use additional kitchen equipment. However, most of the menu, including a range of sandwiches, soups and salads, are available now.
