Many might not realise just how close Everton came to scoring a last-minute equaliser against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon after Amaut Danjuma’s late volley clattered off of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

It didn’t take long for Ange Postecoglou’s side to take the lead as former Toffees frontman Richarlison continued his fantastic form in front of goal with a nice finish past Jordan Pickford following Brennan Johnson’s cross into the six-yard box.

Johnson himself had a chance to make it 2-0 just a few minutes later but blazed his one-on-one effort over the crossbar. However, Spurs wouldn’t waste another chance to double their lead with the Welsh international involved yet again in the build-up.

With just 18 minutes on the clock, Johnson’s effort was beaten away by Pickford but only into the path of Whites captain Son Heung-min who managed to sneak the ball through a mass of bodies and into the back of the net.

After the break Everton thought they’d managed to get a goal back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin after a great ball through by Andre Gomes but it was ruled out for a foul by the latter on Emerson Royal in the build-up. However, Gomes would eventually make up for his mistake by firing home from range on his first appearance of the season.

Spurred on by the goal, the visitors went on a charge. Everton substitute Amaut Danjuma’s effort was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Vicario for a corner before the star had another chance to equalise. Dwight McNeil’s cross found substitute Amaut Danjuma at the far post whose volleyed effort crashed onto the underside on the crossbar and bounced back down onto goalkeeper Vicario’s knee before bouncing out.
