LAKE PLACID — On March 21, Mercy Care for the Adirondacks hosted a full audience for a Technology Assistance Workshop at High Peaks Church in Saranac Lake.

With programming led by Mercy Care Friendship Volunteer Scott Baerman, and Jerry Manor of SeaComm, volunteers and elders learned tips and tricks for using iPads and cellphones, as well as how to avoid scams aimed at older adults.

Mercy Care’s mission is to enhance in every dimension the fullness of life of elders living in this community.

“We host events like this Technology Assistance Workshop to offer the elders we serve with community engagement opportunities while also providing space to socialize and share knowledge among our volunteer and elder friends,” Mercy Care’s Program Director Lexi Bevilacqua said.

Mercy Care hosts community engagement programs throughout the year in the Tri-Lakes area, open to all Mercy Care volunteers, Parish nurses, elder friends, as well as Mercy Care’s Mission Extension Partners across the North Country.

Katherine Rhodes, Mercy Care’s Elder Care Manager, was there to help facilitate, not to learn, but she ended up doing both.

“Scott and Jerry are such great teachers. I think everyone left with at least one new trick up their sleeve. I know I did,” she said.

She wasn’t the only one who learned more than she expected.

The next Mercy Care Friendship Volunteer Training Program is scheduled for May 15, 2024 at Heaven Hill Farm in Lake Placid.

Those interested in becoming a Mercy Care friendship volunteer or Parish nurse, or elders in need the services of a Mercy Care friendship volunteer, can call Mercy Care’s Elder Care Manager Katherine Rhodes at 518-523-5585, contact her by e-mail at krhodes@adkmercy.org, or visit Mercy Care’s website at www.adkmercy.org.
