NCAA Women’s Tournament live updates, scores, highlights: South Carolina vs. Oregon State tips off Elite Eight

Only eight teams are left vying to cut down the nets in Cleveland next week as the NCAA Women’s Tournament draws closer to its end. We’ll know half the Final Four field after Sunday’s action, which features No. 1 seeds South Carolina and Texas taking on No. 3 seeds Oregon State and NC State, respectively.

The Gamecocks led by 22 over Indiana in the Sweet 16 but nearly blew the lead, narrowly surviving to improve their perfect record to 35-0. So while Dawn Staley’s team can often look unstoppable — see the Gamecocks’ 88-41 dismantling of North Carolina in the Round of 32 — it’s not unbeatable. That’s all part of why Staley feels “uncomfortably comfortable” about her team

Oregon State has rolled through Eastern Washington, Nebraska and Notre Dame this tournament off the strength of its frontcourt. Reagan Beers in particular has been excellent, as she helped shut down Hannah Hidalgo while recording 18 points and 13 rebounds against the Fighting Irish.

Texas will look to get star freshman Madison Booker rolling again in its Elite Eight matchup. Booker has had single-digit scoring games in two of her first three NCAA Tournament games after going the full calendar year without one. With Booker tallying only six points in the Longhorns’ Sweet 16 win over Gonzaga, Aaliyah Moore took charge with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

While Booker has been relatively quiet, NC State’s Aziaha James has enjoyed a star-making run this tournament. James, who averages 16.4 points per game, has scored 22 and 29 her last two times out, powering the Wolfpack to a victory over Stanford in the Sweet 16.
