IT firms give ‘pair coders’ to techies – Technology News

[ad_1]

This year, IT companies have been giving coding employees a code companion to help these developers drive productivity. Companies like TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and even midcaps like L&T Technology Services (LTTS) and Persistent Systems have been collaborating with either Amazon or Microsoft’s GitHub to give their employees a pair programmer.

Just four days ago, Thomas Dohmke, CEO, GitHub announced on LinkedIn that it has partnered with Infosys to deploy GitHub Copilot chat at scale, “making natural language the universal programming language for the entire teams company-wide.” The LinkedIn video showed a developer at Infosys using and taking help of copilot chat (by giving prompts) while coding her program.

Last month, TCS launched AWS generative AI practice. As part of the partnership, and to drive up productivity of its clients’ IT organizations, TCS will help them deploy Amazon CodeWhisperer “to provide generative AI-powered code recommendations to developers directly, saving them the effort and enhancing the quality of their code”.

CodeWhisperer is a coding companion that has been trained on billions of lines of codes to generate code suggestions, ranging from snippets to full functions in real time.

Earlier, TCS also announced it will help clients accelerate software development and boost programmer productivity through advisory, foundational set-up and rollout services around GitHub Copilot, a generative AI tool built on Azure OpenAI’s language models that helps programmers develop code faster and with less effort.

In August this year, HCLTech announced that the company intends to use Amazon CodeWhisperer with over 50,000 HCLTech engineers, cloud practitioners and developers to build secure applications and leverage AI responsibly, internally, and for clients.

Similarly, in October, LTTS collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help global automotive manufacturers expedite the transition towards Software Defined Vehicles using Gen AI. The company said at that at the time, it is using Amazon CodeWhisperer as the preferred development environment for engineering teams, which provides AI-powered code recommendations in real-time.

Another IT engineering service firm, Persistent Systems, also announced this year its decision of equipping its 16,000 plus engineering organisations to use Amazon CodeWhisperer to build and deliver industry applications faster and more securely for enterprise clients.

Pareekh Jain, founder, Pareekh Consulting, said, “Even software vendors like ServiceNow, Salesforce, SAP, and Oracle have developed code assistants. Because enterprises work with different softwares provided by these software vendors, there’s potential for IT service providers to get more projects, as they have to integrate different code assistants at the clients’ sites.”

He added that the work will range from cyber security to building interface between between software and others. A recent report from Capgemini disclosed that Generative AI currently generates 13% of code and saves 16% of time for Indian coders. This is in contrast to 12% of codes being generated by Gen AI and is saving 15% of coders’ time globally.
