Xiaomi unveils HyperOS: Human-centric operating system based on AOSP | Technology News

Xiaomi originally started developing HyperOS back in 2017, which is said to act like a bridge between smartphones and other smart devices.

After almost 13 years, Xiaomi is bidding adieu to its first product, MIUI, which will be replaced by HyperOS. Looks-wise, the latest HyperOS, which will be shipped on the Xiaomi 14 series, does mimic MIUI 14. However, it is a completely new operating system, built on top of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and not on Google’s Android.

This means that, unlike the Android-based MIUI, where Google services are a part of the package, with AOSP-based HyperOS, Xiaomi has the freedom to pick and choose the features that add value to users. Hence, in markets that depend on Google Play Services, Xiaomi’s HyperOS will come equipped with the same, which will be available starting Q1 2024.


According to the company, HyperOS is not limited to smartphones; it will also power an entire lineup of smart devices, including personal devices, cars, and home products. It is built with fundamentals like “Low-level Refactoring, Cross-End Intelligent Connectivity, Proactive Intelligence, and End-to-End Security” in mind.

Xiaomi originally started developing HyperOS back in 2017, which is said to act like a bridge between smartphones and other smart devices, helping the brand bring all the products under one umbrella to deliver a consistent user experience across categories.

HyperOS is built on top of Linux and an in-house Xiaomi Vela system, which can support “over 200 processor platforms and over 20 standard file systems.” It is also compatible with a range of hardware, starting with just 64 KB of RAM and going up to 24 GB. This flexibility enables Xiaomi to compile a custom iteration of HyperOS, containing only the necessary resources to improve the performance of a specific device.

Xiaomi also confirms that HyperOS is lighter than MIUI, consuming only 8.75GB of storage on a smartphone. The company is also using AI subsystems to enhance the capabilities of devices running on HyperOS. HyperMind is one such technology, and it also makes use of four foundational models via the Xiaomi AI assistant to add generative AI capabilities to the HyperOS-powered devices.

Some of the generative AI features on HyperOS include the new Mi Canvas app that can transform doodles into artwork, document compression, text-to-image generator, and image extender.

All these features do not compromise user security and privacy, according to Xiaomi, as it employs “end-to-end encryption through TEE for data transmission between devices.” With HyperOS, Xiaomi is looking to deliver a “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem.

HyperOS will ship out-of-the-box on the newly launched Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 14 Pro, Xiaomi Watch S3, Xiaomi TV S Pro 85″ miniLED, and more. The company will also update select devices running on MIUI 14 to HyperOS in the coming days.
