Grant allows Enid business to aim high | News

ENID, Okla. — Emme Hughes, founder and owner of EH Metal Works, was able to show off the most recent addition to her business Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, to a host of economic development and city officials.

That piece of equipment is a fiber laser cutting machine her business, at 5212 E. Market, acquired through a $108,437 U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business Development Grant.

“This is going to open so many doors, not just for Enid, but to help me grow my business,” Hughes said. “I never in a million years dreamed I would get a laser cutting machine.”

She’s had the machine for about a month and went through two days of training with the manufacturer. The laser cutter can cut “anything metallic,” she said. She does her designs on another computer, then transfers those designs to the laser cutter, which then cuts out the part.

One of her goals in expanding her business is to get into the aerospace industry, she said. She recently did some work with an aerospace company in Tulsa, cutting some custom parts.

“I have so many goals for my business,” Hughes said. “I can’t wait to see where I can take it. I just enjoy what I’m doing, I don’t consider it work.”

Hughes worked with Enid Regional Development Alliance on the grant. ERDA will administer the grant — handling the paperwork involved — and owns the equipment. ERDA leases it to Hughes, and after five years, it will become hers.

Kenneth Corn, state director for USDA Rural Development in Oklahoma, was on hand Tuesday.

“We can give people a chance at their dreams,” he said.

His staff is “aggressive about rural development programs,” Corn said, with the goal “to help small and beginning businesses.”

Jaren’s Jerky, another local business also had received a Rural Business Development Grant. Jaren’s Jerky, which currently is housed at the Strate Center for Business Development at Autry Technology Center, received a $42,923 grant that allowed the business to aquire a walk-in dehydrator. That equipment will allow Jaren’s Jerky to grow from a retail business to a wholesaler once USDA approval is made. ERDA also will administer that grant, with Jaren’s Jerky taking possession of the dehydrator after five years.
