Apple is set to take on Google and Samsung in the AI race with a bunch of announcements planned for this year. It has now acquired Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI to push its efforts.
DarwinAI’s systems will help Apple in its efforts to run AI on devices
Apple has given its AI initiatives a big push by acquiring Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI. According to a report by Bloomberg, the iPhone maker purchased the business earlier this year and has already added dozens of DarwinAI’s employees to its artificial intelligence division. The deal is yet to be officially announced but gives Apple a major boost ahead of its big push into generative AI in 2024.
Apple is already a little late to the party. Google has ramped up its AI efforts in the last couple of years and even though its Gemini AI image creator might have failed, the tech giant has received some success in the Generative AI space. Apple’s next closest competitor — Samsung — also introduced its suite of AI features, Galaxy AI, earlier this year with the launch Galaxy S series.
All reports point that Apple isn’t far from its big push either. It is working on a host of AI features that are likely to be announced during company’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June 2024. These features will be part of Apple’s iOS 18 update for iPhones.
What role will DarwinAI play in this? The report claims that DarwinAI’s systems will help Apple in its efforts to run AI on devices instead of in the cloud. This means all the data will be processed natively on the phone and not on cloud. So, users will not have to be connected to the internet to access these features. Also, the processing will be faster than what it is for cloud-based features.
Apart from this, DarwinAI also focuses on AI technology for manufacturing and supply chain uses. It has developed AI technology for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and serves customers in a range of industries. However, one of its key areas of work is to make artificial intelligence systems smaller and faster.
Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build the business, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has already announced company’s plans for new AI announcements this year. The latest development shows we are closer than ever. The WWDC later this year will give a clear idea where Apple stands in the AI race but one can expect host of features in Messages, iWork, Apple Music, Camera and Siri.
