College football schedule: What bowl games are on today? Times, TV channels for Dec. 27

Today’s slate of college football bowl games features a few big schools, but a lot of missing players. Stars at key positions opted out of their team’s respective bowl games – some for the NFL draft, others for the transfer portal.

The two biggest losses are also the two most likely players to be draft with the top two picks in the spring. Neither USC quarterback Caleb Williams nor North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye will play Wednesday, leading the way for a their backups to get some early reps before potentially taking over next year.

A coaching shake-up changed things a bit as well. Tulane head coach Willie Fritz left for the same job at Houston, while incoming head coach Jon Sumrall said he wouldn’t coach the Green Wave in the Military Bowl.

While these changes certainly alters the excitement of these bowl games, the matchups should still offer enticing moments.

Virginia Tech is coming off a 55-point outing in a win over Virginia and will have its best players on tap for the contest. Though the Hokies didn’t register any big wins on the year, they’ll have an opportunity to win their second Military Bowl against Tulane without its starting quarterback, Michael Pratt.

No. 15 Louisville won’t have running back Jawhar Jordan, but will look to avenge a close ACC title loss to Florida State with Jack Plummer at quarterback and a defense that’s allowed fewer than 20 points per game this season. They’ll take on a USC team without it’s three best offensive players in Williams, running back MarShawn Lloyd and wideout Brendan Rice.

North Carolina won’t have its best offensive weapons with Maye and wideout Tez Walker headed to the NFL draft, but running back Omarion Hampton still ranks fifth in the country in rushing yards and scored 16 times on the ground this year. Conner Harrell should start at quarterback but has only completed four career passes with the Tar Heels. They’ll face a West Virginia Mountaineers squad with one of the best rushing attacks between quarterback Garrett Green and running backs CJ Donaldson and Jahiem White.

The biggest question of the night cap between Texas A&M and No. 20 Oklahoma State will be the status of Sooners running back Ollie Gordon II and quarterback Alan Bowman. The availability of both would affect what happens in this game. As for the Aggies, interim head coach Elijah Robinson will still be with the team for the bowl game despite taking the defensive coordinator job at Syracuse. Jaylen Henderson will start at quarterback for A&M after Max Johnson transferred to North Carolina.

In total, Wednesday’s lineup includes four total bowl games with a variety of teams and players. Here’s everything you need to know about the game schedule, including teams, times, location, TV channels and streaming options.

Virginia Tech vs Tulane

Virginia Tech heads into their bowl game off a huge offensive performance in a 55-17 win over Virginia and now faces a Tulane team without a real identity. The Green Wave are missing their head coach and star quarterback but were 11-2 after the season with losses only at the beginning and end of the season. While the Hokies will have 2023 starter Kyron Drones under center, Tulane will likely deploy redshirt sophomore Justin Ibieta, who hasn’t started a game since 2022. Virginia Tech is 13-21 in bowl games, while Tulane is 7-8.

North Carolina vs. West Virginia

The Tar Heels will also feature a new starting quarterback with Drake Maye headed to the NFL draft. They’ll face the third-best rushing unit in the nation in the Mountaineers, who average 275.8 rushing yards per game. North Carolina is 15-22 in bowl games and haven’t won since 2019. West Virginia, meanwhile, is 16-23 in bowl games and haven’t won since 2020.

No. 15 Louisville vs. USC

The ACC runner-up Cardinals take on a Caleb Williams-less Trojans team looking to prepare for a 2024 season without their best players. Louisville has won two of its past three bowl games and is 12-12-1 in their school’s history. USC hasn’t had as much recent luck in bowl games. The Trojans are 35-21 all-time but lost four of their last five bowl games since 2015 and haven’t won one since 2015.

Texas A&M vs. No. 20 Oklahoma State

Quarterback Jaylen Henderson gets another crack to stake his claim as A&M’s starter of the future after he took over in November. He’ll go up against an Oklahoma State squad that could be without its starting quarterback and running back. The Aggies are 20-22 in bowl games and won all three of their most recent games. The Sooners will play in their 18th consecutive bowl game and are 27-28 all-time, having last won in the Fiesta Bowl in 2022.
