Two programs trending in opposite directions will face off when USC clashes with Louisville at the 2023 Holiday Bowl.

The Trojans entered the year with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations, buoyed by the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams. But a high-flying 6-0 start quickly gave way to a 1-5 finish.

Williams, who threw for 30 touchdowns and just five interceptions, will sit out the Holiday Bowl to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft. That leaves sophomore Miller Moss in line to draw his first career start; with freshman Malachi Nelson entering the transfer portal, it’s possible that Moss is the only active scholarship quarterback, too.

In stark contrast, Louisville emerged as one of the sport’s success stories, flourishing under head coach Jeff Brohm, who returned to lead his alma mater after six years at Purdue. The Cardinals finished 10-3 and earned a berth in the ACC Championship Game.

Louisville will be without star running back Jawhar Jordan, who is sitting out to prepare for the draft. That places more pressure on fifth-year senior quarterback Jack Plummer, who may face a new-look Trojans’ defense: Head coach Lincoln Riley parted ways with embattled defensive coordinator Alex Grinch in November, replacing him with D’anton Lynn upon season’s end.
