This is when Elon Musk’s Tesla will introduce its robo-taxi service

Elon Musk-led Tesla is set to reveal its robo-taxi product on August 8. In a post shared on social media X (earlier Twitter), the EV maker’s CEO has confirmed the same. For years, Musk has spoken about the robo-taxi project. As investors grow wary of the carmaker during a period of slowing demand, this project can represent a major new business for the company.

According to a report by CNBC, since Musk’s tweet, Tesla shares have also increased over 3%.

Apart from the launch date, the company hasn’t revealed a date when the robo-taxi service will be available for commercial release.

In 2017, Tesla also unveiled its fully electric heavy-duty truck, the Semi. However, the truck wasn’t delivered to customers until December 2022. The produces and sales of the Semis are still restricted to a handful.

Tesla’s advancement in autonomous car technology
At an event last year, the company also showed off a completely covered vehicle while unveiling the company’s third Master Plan. In 2015 Elon Musk told shareholders that Tesla’s cars will achieve “full autonomy” within three years.

Meanwhile, in 2016, the billionaire said that the carmaker will be able to send one of its cars on a cross-country drive without requiring any human intervention by the end of the following year.

Tesla has yet to deliver a robotaxi, autonomous vehicle or technology that can turn its cars into “level 3” automated vehicles.

However, Tesla offers advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which includes a standard Autopilot option or premium Full Self-Driving “FSD” option. For the FSD option, US subscribers have to pay $199 per month or $12,000 upfront.

Aside from Tesla, Google-parent Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle unit Waymo operates commercial, driverless ride-hailing services in multiple US cities including Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The company is also preparing to launch its services in Austin, Texas soon.

Recently, Waymo also struck a multi-year partnership with Uber to use its robotaxis to deliver food for Uber Eats in Arizona.

Meanwhile, in China, Didi’s autonomous unit already operates commercially in markets including Guangzhou. Other companies including Wayve in the UK and Zoox in the US are also testing their robotaxis.
