Zomato CEO has a warning for startup founders on how business models may disappear

Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has an important ‘warning’ for startup founders. Speaking at the recently-concluded Startup Mahakumbh in New Delhi, Goyal said that startups will need to innovate to create long-lasting businesses as the rapid evolution of technology will make current business models irrelevant in the years to come.

“With all the tech and distribution systems that are changing, no business model will last beyond a decade or two. Startups will have to innovate and create new businesses out of the outcomes that they have created so far if they have to last longer,” said Goyal.

He further added that building a generational company is harder now. “For Zomato, it is all about how we disrupt our own businesses. Zomato is already at version four in its 16-year journey,” Goyal said at the Startup Mahakumbh event.

Goyal hinted that the company’s quick commerce business Blinkit could get bigger than Zomato in a year’s time. The Gurgaon-based food delivery major had acquired Blinkit (formerly Grofers) in a Rs 4,447 crore deal in 2022 to get a foothold in the instant delivery market in India.

Zomato rolls back green uniform for Veg Fleet
Amid a backlash over its policy to introduce a new “Pure Veg Mode” service, Zomato CEO Goyal last week said that the company will roll back the move to introduce green uniform for its new fleet, clarifying that all its riders will continue to wear red.

The Zomato CEO was in the eye of a storm after the launch of a “Pure Veg Mode” service, intended for strictly vegetarian customers in India, to be delivered by a “Pure Veg Fleet”. Netizens expressed concern over the move, saying that some societies and RWAs may not allow Zomato’s regular fleet to enter on the basis of the red-green colour segregation.

“While we are going to continue to have a fleet for vegetarians, we have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet on the ground using the colour green. All our riders — both our regular fleet, and our fleet for vegetarians, will wear the colour red,” Goyal said in an update post on X, formerly Twitter.
