ChatGPT 4 ‘sucks’? What Sam Altman says could come in ChatGPT5

While the world is in the awe of AI models – especially the ‘OG’ ChatGPT – for Sam Altman, GPT-4 “sucks”. GPT-4 is technically the latest version of the large language model (LLMs) – the technology that powers the paid version of ChatGPT AI chatbot. The free version is powered by GPT-3.5.

Launched in March last year, GPT-4 is billed as much faster and more accurate in its responses than its previous model GPT-3. The LLM is available with a subscription model and those who wish to work with a more refined version, can use GPT-4 Turbo that made its debut in November.

This model is said to be more capable and has knowledge of world events up to April 2023. The company said that it addressed the problems of “laziness” – a term used when the model sometimes refuses to answer prompts.

For Altman, all these capabilities in the model “suck”.

“I think it kind of sucks,” Altman responded to a question on what’s that one capability he likes the most about GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo.

He then clarified that while “it is an amazing thing” but it sucks when compared with where the company needs to get.

“I think it is an amazing thing, but relative to where we need to get to and where I believe we will get to [it sucks],” he said in an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman.

“At the time of GPT-3, people were like, “Oh! This is amazing. This is like [a] marvel of technology”, and it was,” Altman added. “But now we have GPT-4 and GPT-3 is unimaginably horrible.”

Altman on what to expect from GPT-5
The CEO also touched upon what to expect from the next version of GPT. He

“I expect that the delta between GPT-5 and GPT-4 to be the same as GPT-4 and GPT-3. And I think its our job to live a few years in the future, and remember that the tools we have now are gonna kind of suck looking backwards at them. That’s how we make sure the future is better,” he said.

When asked when GPT-5 will launch, Altman replied by saying he doesn’t know. However, he noted that OpenAI “will release an amazing model this year.” “I don’t know what to call it.”

Recently, a report said that OpenAI is already demoing GPT-5 to some businesses and may launch it sometime mid-year, likely during summer. The CEO of one of the companies said that the GPT-5 is “really good, like materially better.” OpenAI’s GPT-5 is reportedly still under training, and it will then be safety tested internally.
