AI research organisation OpenAI fired two of its researchers for allegedly leaking information, according to a new report published Friday. The two people fired reportedly include Leopold Aschenbrenner, a close associate of OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

The Information, which broke the story, reports that it is not clear what information was leaked. But there have been internal strikes and grievances within the OpenAI team. Sam Altman, the company’s CEO was forced out of his chief position as well as the board of directors last November in what seemed like a coup by Sutskever.

OpenAI at the time announced in a blog post that it had no confidence in Altman’s ability to lead the company, adding that he was “inconsistent in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.” But after an internal investigation by the company, Altman was reinstated as the CEO and Sutskever later apologised for his actions.

Aschenbrenner was reportedly a “rising star” within the company’s safety team, and was a prodigy that graduated from Columbia Univerisity at the age of 19. He previously worked with Future Fund, which is a philanthropic organisation affiliated with the effective altruism movement, which by itself, is famously associated with FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

OpenAI this week unveiled an improved version of GPT-4 Turbo, which it made available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and via API. GPT-4 Turbo is the latest generative AI model from the company and uses training data up to December 2023. The company claims GPT-4 Turbo can generate fully functional websites by producing real code. It can also reportedly read an image, understand the content and context, and produce meaningful output.
