Heart surgeon earns national honor
Dr. David Jayakar, part of the cardiovascular team at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Longview Regional Medical Center, has been named 47th in the nation to achieve the Diamond Level of the Beating Heart Hall of Fame, completing more than 1,100 off-pump coronary artery bypass procedures.
The award was presented by Getinge, which provides hospitals and life science institutions with products and solutions aiming to improve clinical results and optimize workflows.
Jayakar is the first surgeon in East Texas to achieve this honor.
Beating heart surgery, also known as off-pump surgery, involves performing intricate cardiac procedures without stopping the heart or putting the patient on a heart-lung machine, according to information from Longview Regional.
This approach reduces the risks associated with traditional surgeries, such as stroke, kidney failure and bleeding, resulting in shorter recovery times and improved patient outcomes.
“This achievement recognizes Dr. Jayakar’s exceptional skill and dedication in performing beating heart surgeries, a technique that has revolutionized the way cardiac procedures are conducted,” said Steve Gordon, CEO of Longview Regional.

Melinda Hermanns, School of Nursing professor at The University of Texas at Tyler, has been selected as a member of The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine, MD, Academy of Health Science Education.
The Shine Academy’s mission is to serve the UT System through the support and promotion of excellence in all aspects of health science education, educational scholarship and leadership. It is a working service academy and honorific body that recognizes 16 faculty candidates in the UT System who embody its dedication to health science education.
Hermanns was also awarded as an Outstanding Faculty by Texas Alpha Xi Chapter of Alpha Chi Honor Society, previously inducted into the National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education and recognized as one of East Texas’ Healthcare Heroes – Nurses by UT Tyler. She obtained her PhD in nursing from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and her post-bachelor’s certificate in nursing informatics, quality & safety from UT Tyler.
”Throughout her career, Dr. Hermanns has demonstrated her commitment to health care education, and we are very proud for her to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Julie V.
