Year 2023 has been all about artificial intelligence, Large Language Models (LLM), machine learning, and big giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta releasing their own generative AI systems. However, in this frenzy for next-gen AI systems, Apple seemed to be lagging behind. The company so far hasn’t formally announced its AI move even as Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Facebook — and even Amazon — talk of their LLMs. But the iPhone-maker is indeed working on its own LLMs and now details have started trickling in.
A new report says that Apple is in talks with major news publishers, including Conde Nast, NBC News, and IAC, to licence their news archives in order to train its LLM models. According to the New York Times, Apple is considering multi-year deals valued at a minimum of $50 million with these publications for their data.
The data will possibly help Apple in training its AI with more factual and up-to-date information with real-world language usage. It will offer factual accuracy, varied writing styles, insights into current events and trends, and opportunities for human-like analysis.
News content from top publishers has become valuable for AI and tech companies and they are increasingly looking to use to train their LLMs. OpenAI, for instance, had earlier signed deals with the Associated Press and Politico’s parent company, Axel Springer, for similar purposes. Google, too, is actively working on AI-powered tools to assist journalists.
Generative AI in iPhone?
At the same time, a more interesting report is about a paper authored by researchers associated with Apple. This paper suggests that Apple is working on ways to make LLMs and tools like ChatGPT run locally on iPhone and Mac. Currently, the AI services are run on cloud computers, and they require a substantial amount of horse-power to do their calculations before they generate text. Although, it is beginning to change as Google recently promised that its Gemini Nano will run on Pixel phones, albeit with help of its cloud infrastructure.
Now recent research papers, as reported by Bloomberg, reveal that Apple is developing on-device AI technology, including methods for creating animatable avatars and running large language models (LLMs) efficiently on iPhones or iPads.
The research, dubbed “LLM in a Flash,” reveals that Apple plans to enable the smooth running of complex AI applications on devices with limited memory. This development could pave the way for on-device generative AI tools, potentially enhancing Siri’s capabilities to handle various tasks and process natural language more effectively.
It is also worth noting that Apple’s current chipsets — A series in iPhone and M series in Mac — are extremely powerful chips with dedicated silicon space earmarked specifically for AI calculations.
Another notable advancement for integrating AI into the iPhone is Apple’s creation of “HUGS” (Human Gaussian Splats). It is a method that will allow the iPhone to generate fully animatable avatars from short video clips captured on the phone.
Apple has yet to publicly confirm the implementation of generative AI into its products or officially acknowledge its work with Apple GPT. But rumours and chatter strongly suggest that the company would not want to be left behind in the AI race, and more so now that Google is expected to push its Gemini and Bard AI tools into Pixel phones. At the same time, OpenAI is reportedly exploring ways to make a smartphone that will be powered entirely by AI. The company has reportedly explored collaboration with Jony Ive, who was earlier chief designer at Apple and who has been one of the key persons behind almost all Apple products launched in the last two decades.
