The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has accused Apple of using “illegally exploited” minerals for its products. Lawyers representing the African country have alleged that the Cupertino-based tech giant extracted these minerals from the nation’s war-torn region.
The Paris-based lawyers for the DRC accused the iPhone maker of purchasing minerals smuggled from the country into neighbouring Rwanda. The lawyers claimed that this is where the “blood minerals” are laundered and “integrated into the global supply chain”.

According to a report by the news agency AFP, DRC’s lawyers have sent Apple a formal cease and desist notice to Apple. With this notice, the country has warned the US-based tech giant that it will face legal action if the company continues its alleged practice.
“Apple has sold technology made with minerals sourced from a region whose population is being devastated by grave human rights violations,” DRC lawyers wrote in a letter sent to Apple. The lawyers also claimed that rampant sexual violence, armed attacks and widespread corruption have also been reported at sites providing minerals to Apple.
Macs, iPhones, and other Apple products are “tainted by the blood of the Congolese people”, the letter noted.
“Apple has consistently relied on a range of suppliers that buy minerals from Rwanda, a mineral-poor country that has preyed upon the DRC and plundered its natural resources for nearly three decades. Apple seems to rely mainly on the vigilance of its suppliers and their commitment to respect Apple’s code of conduct,” reads the official letter.
French lawyers William Bourdon and Vincent Brengarth added that they’ve sent a formal notice to two Apple subsidiaries in France this week. The letter has also been sent to Apple’s lawyer Robert Amsterdam at the tech company’s US headquarters.

While responding to the news agency AFP, Apple pointed towards the statements from its 2023 annual corporate report. In this report, the company shared details regarding the alleged use of so-called “conflict minerals” important for a wide range of high-tech products.
The report said: “Based on our due diligence efforts… we found no reasonable basis for concluding that any of the smelters or refiners of 3TG (tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold) determined to be in our supply chain as of December 31, 2023, directly or indirectly financed or benefited armed groups in the DRC or an adjoining country.”
